Why did Microsoft discontinue the Zune HD?

I have been a loyal Zune/XBOX customer for years and now looking to replace my 8gb Zune that I've had for 4 or 5 years and cannot find a Zune HD anywhere. Since it's been discontinued Amazon has jacked up the price of a new one. I honestly think that Zune is far superior to Ipod in the MP3 department. Now I'm gonna be forced to buy an Ipod Touch.  I kinda feel betrayed by Microsoft.

Hi Zombie79,

Thank you for your question and your concern. I believe the answer can be summed up with in the first sentence of the press release, "...going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players". We appreciate and share your feelings regarding the Zune device, however we have decided to move forward with a new strategy and we hope that we will be able to get you back on board soon.

    We can only hope that when Windows Phone really catches on in the smartphone market, Microsoft will have another go at the Zune device.

    I feel betrayed as well. I bought my Zune HD16 about 2 years ago. Loved it from day one. Love the Zune Pass as well,still subscribe to that. I really don't know where I heard about ZuneHD, probably in a forum somewhere. Anyways, after the  lack of advertising and support for HD what do they expect?

    But why should they expect me to go out and buy any other MS product, be it phone, tablet, gaming system, or even a mouse after they discontinue this one item after virtually no support? Why should I or anyone buy a Windows phone if in two years they're gonna say 'Sorry, the demand wasn't there'?

    Personally, I'll look into buying an unlocked WP7 so that I can keep my ZunePass content on some form of an MP3 player. There is no way that iTunes has anything to offer that would rival ZunePass.

    It's just sad that Microsoft appears to be sending it all off to the grave instead of actually working to market it and give it a broader appeal (by NOT forcing folks into phones that they don't want).

    Im from mexico and im very disappointed too, I have a zune 30g 1st generation and i love it, still work perfectly.  

    I went shopping to US last christmas, i wanted to buy zune hd and ask for it in every store and neither one has it, they didnt tell me is discontinued until now that im browsing for it  I realize so sad :(

    but why is still on the zune webpage????
