Hi,

·         What is the file format of the movie that you’re trying to publish?

Also, this issue usually happens when a photo or video file that  you added to Windows Movie Maker/Live movie maker was either deleted, moved, or in use by another program. Try closing all other programs when saving the movie in Windows Movie Maker.

Some end users have resolved this issue by saving the movie as “High-definition (720p)” instead “High-definition (1080p)”.

I would also suggest you to go through the links below that include steps to create a movie in Movie Maker in Windows 7.

Hi Pamela,

There are several factors that could be contributing to this problem. Please take the following solution one at a time until we fix the problem.

Ensure you have installed the latest version of Windows Live Movie Maker**:** • http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started.

 • For Windows Vista - The current 2011 version: 15.4.3555.0308

 • For Windows 7 / 8 - The current 2012 version: 16.4.3503.728

 • Windows Live Movie Maker is not supported on Windows XP

Make sure that the files you are using are of a supported format – Some file formats are not supported by Windows Live Movie Maker. A list of supported formats can be found here:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-file-types-faq

Check if the media files still available or locally saved on your computer. You can find the location of the file and set it manually, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open the project file in Windows Live Movie Maker.
  2. Double-click on the image that is showing the error icon.
  3. Click on Find, locate where the photos are saved.
  4. Open the folder, and then click Open.

Note: When you create a project file it is much better if you can save the source files locally in your computer.

Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.  Audio and Video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC.

MediaInfo will be able to identify any issues with missing or faulty codecs and whether it’s already installed in your computer or not. You can get it here.

Note*: If you can't find the codec you need you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Movie Maker project.*

Ensure that your video card drivers are up to date. Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

  1. Click on Start button and type dxdiag in the Search programs and files box and press Enter key on the keyboard.
  2. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.  If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

Hope that helps.

Thanks,

Gerard G.

    Movie Maker error: 0x87160138 :        (June 15, 2016 )

I encountered the same problem- I'm assembling, via Movie Maker a very large slide show of family photos.

Before you scramble to upload the most current version of MM- and that's probably a great idea for later- check to see if your file is too large. I suspected that because I'm a "redundant saver". Why? Well, over the years having lost critical files for one reason or another, now whenever I'm undertaking a big digital project I'll save it periodically and in different drives. I'll get back to that later as it will probably be more logical to you later.

When I got that error message, I had added to roughly 300 still photos to another 300-400. Yet, previous to the error message, I had successfully saved my progress multiple times, and did so in two ways:  (1) File / Save project as / [give that file a name...I use a progressive system- a different "file name" each time I save it. This file shows  a MP4 extension, but placing the cursor over it shows "Movie Maker Project". In other words, this is your 'work product'; that is, your work-in-progress, but is not the final product. As a side note, when I save a file sequentially I always make the file name somewhat different. That way I don't overwrite any, and I can re-construct at various points if I later encounter a problem. (e.g.- 20160611a , 20160611b  , etc. )

Enter error: 0x87160138. By the way, why can't programmers just give ordinary grinders like me a clue, like: file exceeds maximum size ( ? ).

The second (2) way to save is: File / Save Movie / Recommended for this project (it will assume the name you gave it as in the first save) but this is indeed a MP4..saved files should show a different icon than saving using the first (1) method. This second way of saving saves your slide show as such. This will be the 'finished product'. A key reason I prefer MM is that you can assign each photo varying times. Simple photos may be best when shown for just two seconds, but photos of a group of people may need ten or more seconds of screen-time.

Anyway, when you save it the second way- to my knowledge- that's it. You can't edit it. So that's why using both methods for saving is important.

To determine if my suspicion of the file being to large was correct, after maybe ten such error messages- no matter what I did to avoid it, I saved it the first (1) way- which always works for me. That was the work-in-progress. Then, I removed maybe 300 photos and saved it- again by the first (1) method. Doing that meant I could return to either file and continue working on it / either.

Then, I used the second (2) saving method (remember, this is the smaller file) and PRESTO, it saved perfectly. I got no "error message". Now I have two MP4 (finished products). Ideally, I would much prefer having just one, but having two looks like I figured a way around error: 0x87160138 .

I hope this helps. Good luck!

    R.S.
