Hi, I have a system with a C:drive (a SSD drive that Windows runs on) a E drive (ordinary hard drive) an external drive used for backups and a CD/DVD drive. The C drive died. My computer supplier (it's less than a year old) told me to extract the drive, I sent it to them, and after a long wait received a replacement. That's now installed and running. I have Windows on it anc can access the files on my other drive. But I cannot get the system image from my external backup to copy back across. I keep getting "The system image restore failed. Error details: The disk that is set as active in Bios is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation (Ox80042407). But the replacement disk is the same as my original which died. It also wants to reformat my E drive, which is rather worrying, as there was no problem with that. This is after having followed its previous instruction to boot from the Windows Install disk. Desperate for help.

Use this guide to inspect the contents of the 141GB .VHD file. You should see an exact image of your Windows partitions and folders along with the pagefile and possibly the hibernation file. Chech to see if the is a folder named X:\Boot (where X: is the drive letter assigned to the mounted image).

OK I've done that and examined the contents of one of my three backup files. It still shows at 119GB, I don't understand how and why, as my old SSD hard disk C: was 120GB and never full. Anyway, I see unnecessary things like games and another Windows old file on there, so are you saying that I should delete those (can I do that from examining the disk image) then try the recovery via the Acronis recovery disk again?
Go conservative, the Windows.old folder could be a large one, so backup/copy that image file before you make any changes and then delete the windows.old folder. As far how Acronis will treat this modified (Minus the Windows.old folder) .VHD file is an area I haven't tried yet.
