System image restore failed

Hi, I have a system with a C:drive (a SSD drive that Windows runs on) a E drive (ordinary hard drive) an external drive used for backups and a CD/DVD drive.  The C drive died.  My computer supplier (it's less than a year old) told me to extract the drive, I sent it to them, and after a long wait received a replacement.  That's now installed and running.  I have Windows on it anc can access the files on my other drive.  But I cannot get the system image from my external backup to copy back across.  I keep getting "The system image restore failed.  Error details: The disk that is set as active in Bios is too small to recover the original system disk.  Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation (Ox80042407).  But the replacement disk is the same as my original which died.  It also wants to reformat my E drive, which is rather worrying, as there was no problem with that.  This is after having followed its previous instruction to boot from the Windows Install disk.  Desperate for help.

    Hi,  I followed the instructions exactly.  At stage 4) there was indeed a little "system reserved" partition from our previous efforts (little unallocated space, little system reserved partiton, the rest of the unallocated space, the data partition).  I deleted it so that I just had 150gb unallocated and then the data.

    At stage 6)R  I noticed the partition was marked primary but not active, unlike the system reserved partition which is primary and active.  Is that correct?  The partition size said free space before 0, free space after 28.66Gb.  I tried changing it to 0, but that just made it say that there was 28.66Gb _before_ and 0 after.  I put it back to the before setting, and proceeded.

    At stage 6)S the 2nd volume label was blank, which I presume is correct.

    I clicked proceed 6)T and after a minute or so got the "Recover operation failed" popup.

    At stage 6)R  I noticed the partition was marked primary but not active, unlike the system reserved partition which is primary and active.  Is that correct? Answer: Yes that is correct, only the System, Reserved should be marked 'Active'.

    The partition size said free space before 0, free space after 28.66Gb. Answer: Don't change it, that can be fixed after Windows is installed.

    At stage 6)S the 2nd volume label was blank, which I presume is correct. Answer: The volumn label will be blank if you never assigned that partition a name.

    I clicked proceed 6)T and after a minute or so got the "Recover operation failed" popup. :-(   

    This also happened when trying to convert from .VHD to .TIB in our earlier attempt. Do you have any other Windows 7 Backup and Restore image backups to work with, I beginning to think the backup is corrupt?

    I only have the 3 vhd files listed previously (three distinctly different sizes).
