System image restore failed

Hi, I have a system with a C:drive (a SSD drive that Windows runs on) a E drive (ordinary hard drive) an external drive used for backups and a CD/DVD drive.  The C drive died.  My computer supplier (it's less than a year old) told me to extract the drive, I sent it to them, and after a long wait received a replacement.  That's now installed and running.  I have Windows on it anc can access the files on my other drive.  But I cannot get the system image from my external backup to copy back across.  I keep getting "The system image restore failed.  Error details: The disk that is set as active in Bios is too small to recover the original system disk.  Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation (Ox80042407).  But the replacement disk is the same as my original which died.  It also wants to reformat my E drive, which is rather worrying, as there was no problem with that.  This is after having followed its previous instruction to boot from the Windows Install disk.  Desperate for help.

    Use this guide to inspect the contents of the 141GB  .VHD file.  You should see an exact image of your Windows partitions and folders along with the pagefile and possibly the hibernation file.  Chech to see if the is a folder named  X:\Boot (where X: is the drive letter assigned to the mounted image).

    One is called Backup 2011-02-07 0633927 141 GB (and that date does not tally with the dates of the three backups which the two recovery options are offering me; the second is called Catalog size 0 bytes; the third is called SPPMetadataCache 0bytes and alongside them sits the file MediaID 1KB

    One of the thre will be a small .VHD file, this is the backup of the 100MB 'System,Reserved' partition (it contain the BCD store and should be the first partition restored to a new drive or when recovering an existing drive), the second .VHD file (and by far the largest) should be your Windows partition. If there is a third .VHD file that could be a recovery partition or diagnostic partition (usually 10 to 20GB in size) put there by the computer manufacture.
