Same thing happened to me - had to download
manually from microsoft website - it did work for me -
after two downloads and recheck for updates it
no longer offers -

During the june 2011 update, i have already downloaded the KB 2538242 visual c++ redistributable update but after restart, I still keep on having the same update when I checked. I downloaded it the second time around then restarted then checked for updates again, it is still there. Is this necessary? Why do I keep on getting the update? Do I need to download a lot of KB2538242 update? or is there something wrong with my system? or is it a form of virus?

2011-11-28T15:30:18+00:00 a lot of folks are only having this problem w/ vista x64. I'm eager to dig out Explorer and see if it'll work for me. Right now I'm off to have a root canal. It should be about as much fun as this has been. Although I enjoy puzzles, this one is gettin' old!

I had the same problem. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit Operating System. The File that should be downloaded for my system is: vcredist_x86.exe
First what I did to try to solve it was re-download and re-install. That obviously did not work.
Secondly, I tried to manually download and install it. On the download, I was using Firefox as my browser and I have an add-on that automatically saves all downloads. After saving the download I open the file and tried to install it. That obviously did not work for me.
Third, I tried switching browsers to Internet Explorer and then trying to download the 64bit file. Of course I received an error message saying that the File is not compatible with my computer.
Fourth, I then tried downloading the correct file and installing it. After selecting to download it, I clicked on "Run". Then I got a security and privacy notification Policy window; you have to select "I agree to the terms" to be able to continue. Then the installation continued and I received a message saying that the update had installed.
Fifth, I then checked to make sure it showed up on the installed programs list and then restarted my computer.
Sixth, After restarting my computer and going through the start up procedures I checked and made sure it was in the installed programs list and then rechecked Windows Update. It was not listed on the Windows Update list.
So, what did I do to cause it to install properly?
The only things I can think of is 2 things.
- switching to Internet Explorer as my browser because of the add-on on Firefox that automatically saves all downloads.
2) Not saving the download. Clicking "Run" to immediately install the download, instead of trying to save and then open the file to run the install program.
Those 2 things, are the only things that I can think of, that may have made the difference in making the download work for me.
I hope everyone can get their problems resolved as easily as mine was! It is a shame that we have to try to find a solution to these problems with the updates, by ourselves! It makes it seem that Microsoft does not care!
However, when you do notify them that you are experiencing a problem, they have always tried to come up with a solution to the problem as quickly and as efficiently as possible! At least, that has been my experience with them.
