I cannot update my windows with the automatic updates it alerts me of. When i try to it gives me the error code 800B010A or sometimes 0x800B010A; what does this mean? I tried to have windows fix it but it wouldn't work. I noticed a lot of the updates it needs to do(9) have to do with security, which worries me if i am not protected with ms security updates. I also cannot run windows defender and the icon in the bottom right showing my signal strenth for my wireless connection has all empty bars with a big red X going through it but for some reason i have no problem getting online. i called one of those online geek squad people and before he charged me i told him what the problems were and he thinks it is a glitch in the windows 7 OS. he didn't think it was a virus since i dont have any problems with my computer, i have virus protection and these are not common things a virus attacks. he told me the only way to fix this would be to do a factory restore but i would lose everything and have to start over like my computer just came out of the box. i dont mind doing this if it will help secure longevity on this computer as i just got it a little over a year ago but would prefer not to if i dont have to. any ideas of why this is happening and how i can fix it??? thanks!

Sorry but the alerts to this thread are not reaching me in a timely manner. We'll start with number4... NO PROBLEM, THANKS FOR ALL OF THIS, I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!

4. Your computer appears to be running 2 software firewalls concurrently ( at the same time ). All that does is to cause Operatin System issues. It offers no added protection.

When NSS installed it should have disabled the native Windows 7 firewall. Open NSS and disable it's firewall component for now.

If your not sure how to do that, either consult the User Guide or Help file.

That should leave the Windows Firewall as On. Be sure that it is.

Click the Start orb. In the Search all programs and files field type in fireUnder Control Panel, click on the Windows Firewall link to ensure it's showing as On next to **Windows Firewall state:... DID ALL OF THESE DIRECTIONS. NSS FIREWALL IS OFF AND WINDOWS FIREWALL IS ON. ARE YOU SURE IT IS OK TO LEAVE NSS FIREWALL OFF? IT KEEPS GIVING ME POP UPS THAT MY COMPUTER IS NOW MORE LIKELY TO INCUR HACKER AND VIRUSES. I AM NERVOUS. SHOULD I LEAVE NSS FIREWALL ON INSTEAD AND TURN WINDOWS FIREWALL OFF?? 1. After uninstalling McAfee did you run the McAfee Removal tool ? If not, suggest you do to confirm that there are no leftover components of it still present -

a. Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, save to the Desktop:http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust\_support\_patches/MCPR.exe

b,Close all open programs, browsers, or applications.

c. Right click MCPR.exe and choose 'Run as administrator'. Agree to the UAC prompt.

Do not do anything while the tool is running. Restart the system when it finishes...DID ALL OF THESE DIRECTIONS

2. This issue may be related to the improper uninstallation of McAfee. Let's deal with the updates failure to install and get back to the network icon later.

Download and save the Fixit on this page - How do I reset Windows Update components

When the download completes, read this to see - How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Restart to the Clean boot state and then run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi, use the Default mode.

When it's finished running, restart the system if prompted to and then see if the system can update.

If it can not, run the Fixit once more, choose the Aggressive mode.

Restart the system to the same clean boot state and see if it can update now... I DID ALL OF THESE AND ON THE FIRST TRY TWO UPDATES WERE UPDATED BUT 9 WERE NOT. THEN I DID THE AGRESSIVE ONE AND A COUPLE MORE WERE UPDATED BUT 11 WERE NOT. I HAVE A FEELING IT IS THE SAME UPDATES THAT ARE NOT BEING UPDATED. Whether the system can update or not, undo the clean boot steps that you previously did and restart to normal Windows mode...HOW DO I DO THIS? PLEASE BE DETAILED. thanks. i have norton security suite through comcast. i run it at least 3 times a day- full system scan. nothing has ever been detected, or if it has, not in awhile and it was quarantined and fixed. everytime i run a scan it says issues that were detected and fixed were just cookies.

i did what you told me to and when i typed that it it said Direct Access <no proxy server>. what does that mean? is there anything else i can do to fix this problem or what should i do? thanks again.
