What is the BEST Registry Cleaner for Win 7 Ultimate or Pro 64 Bit version OS ?

I agree with you that pre-Windows 7 a registry cleaner can often reduce problems.

However with the advent of Windows 7 and subsequent versions, the registry is constructed differently, and applications access the registry in a different manner, therefore the fact that it's "untidy" is of no consequence at all, and isn't worth bothering about.

So, to sum it all up:

• Microsoft designed the registry as a vital part of the Windows operating systems.
• Microsoft failed to supply us with a registry maintenance tool to check, clean and repair the registry, and check for wrong use of the registry
• Software producers use the registry incorrectly, and don't clean up their registry entries after their software has been removed.
• So after a while the registry becomes partly a garbage bin of orphaned and badly used registry entries.
• There are certainly circumstances that these registry entries may cause serious problems.
• Never the less, Microsoft claims leaving the garbage in the registry is what you should do, after all Microsoft has no utility to solve the garbage problem.
• Microsoft also warns that using a third party registry cleaner may cause more problems because you never know how software suppliers have abused the registry.
• So if you have problems with the registry, you're left on your own using the registry editor to search the thousands of junk entries for the ones that are causing the problems. Microsoft does not offer any support.

It all sounds like a really well thought over set up, designed for a stable operating system.

I don't think anyone will tell you that taking a shot in the dark--which is what wholesale registry cleaning is--will never or has never solved a problem.  The fact is that it's likely to have either no effect one way or the other, or to cause a problem.  You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.   Microsoft doesn't offer a registry cleaner because there is no good reason to do so.

Well, on page 11 (7 november) tdalej reports that cleaning the registry caused the problems on his server to disappear. It was almost immediately dismissed as pure coincidence. That way it is easy to keep on saying that cleaning the registry has no effect of course. And that is certainly not the first time that I've read an account that cleaning the registry has resolved problems.

I don't know where the statement that you don't have to do any registry maintenance came from. To me it sounds like a kind of excuse from Microsoft for the fact that they never made such a utility.

I would be much more sympathetic to your complaint if it amounted to something other than "I don't like it because it's not tidy."  There is no evidence that I know of that cleaning the registry results in "greatly reduced problems" unless the problems are one's personal issues with control.
