What is the Java TM Plug in SSV Helper

The overwhelming number of near-useless, tautological replies to this question here and elsewhere is pretty disappointing.

Here is what I discovered, buried inthis bug report on Sun's Java community:

"This object is responsible for a propagation of Java Plug-in settings from admin account to all regular (non admin) user accounts. In other words if SSVHelper is registered with IE then the only thing admin needs to do in order to switch from a new Java Plug-in to an old Java Plug-in is to run from a command line: ssvagent.exe -high -jpisetup -old or uncheck a checkbox "Enable the next generation Java Plug-n" in Java Control Panel. In both cases changes will be propagated to non admin user accounts."

Therefore, if you are not in a managed, Enterprise environment—as in, this is your own personal computer—then the SSVHelper Java Browser Helper Object does nothing useful for you, and can be safely disabled.

Thank you so much for your explaining this in a clear concise manner to someone that done not understand all the tech lingo.  I appreciate people taking time to help others out.  Sometimes it takes hours to find out a simple answer like this.  My poor computer has enough problems and I do not want anything that I don't need!

I think Java is intended as a "beginner" web developers tool. If you are not a Network information worker, or private web developer, can't imagine what you really need it for. If you see popups asking you to install something, treat them like viruses. If they persist, block the site elliciting them.

Maybe we need to share some blunt honesty. Java like Flash is a browser extension, but it is also a program that wraps itself around your OS, whatever your OS is. Once it’s installed, your OS installation is permanently ‘dented’. Personally, I find Flash is the bad boy. It saturates 70% of Internet traffic with pornography, drugs, ripped-off soft wares, you name it, it gets corrupted and corrupts everything else in your machine. Java is much kinder. Other than the SSV Helper fiasco, and a few trillion virus segments written to infect Java, she’s fine. * * *

If only Flash (*) was so sweet. If only java were part of Windows, Mac, Linux, it would be adequately secured. Can we live without it? YES! As for those viral popups (Microsoft and Apple are snickering at us lab rats right now, Linux is cool), DO NOT INSTALL. Browsing family sites last few days, I only had to open Control Panel / Programs and Features once to remove some garbage hacker’s Flash application that Windows installed without permission. * * *
