Hi, I can't get Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to install. I'm running Ultimate. I''m installing via Windows Update. I've got internet access. I've tried multiple times, but I always get an E_FAIL 0x80004005. I looked in the CBS.log and find (around the error) this:

Right on. I also did an in place upgrade (or what some others call a repair installation), and SP1 installed after the 1-2 hours it took to redo the installation. Pain in the butt, but it worked. I'm surprised no one from the Microsoft support team has posted this as a possible solution on these forums--I've only seen it mentioned by community members like NickMoul.
After trying everything, I performed an in place upgrade, using a DVD I had of my version of Windows 7. Don't forget to write down your activation code before you do it.
After inplace upgrade SP1 installed with no issues. I have no idea what was wrong, but W7 performs same as before.
MS needs to sort this out with a Fix-It link.
Only clue was that the inplace upgrade notified me that dot NET 4 was e corrupted and needed a reinstall which it downloaded and reinstalled. Hope that help someone.

Tried 6 times so far but no luck. Worked fine on laptop running win 7 home edition x64 but NOT on win 7 pro x64 on desktop. Did everything all the people suggested, i.e., clean boots, install from safe mode, install from iso instead, even reformat and install before drivers install and nothing has worked... Not a happy camper... Just 1 more of the updates I have to "hide" because they won't work..
It worked on my desktop without a problem, all i had to do was to click install updates lol. But the problems come with my laptop i have tried twice already and it takes eternity because it has to install then FAIL the go on "reverting changes" for about 40 minutes -.- Although i see that SP1 doesnt have that many huge benefits i like the feeling of being up to date :) we need help here why arent the admins doing anything -.-
Are you using a 64-bit system. We've spent the better part of today trying to get SP1 to install on 2 PCs (we have 4 more to go). One PC is a 32-bit system, the other is a 64-bit system. I finally got it to install on the 32-bit system after terminating my virus/spyware protection and most other applets running in the system tray. We've had the same problems and have tried the same processes for installing SP1 on the 64-bit system without success. As I write this, I'm trying again from Safe Mode using a DVD burned from the ISO file I downloaded from Microsoft Downloads Center. That was another issue ... what did they do??? ship their servers to TIMBUCKTU? It took 4+ hours to download the ISO file!
I'll keep trying to install on the 64-bit PC ... (right now it's made it to about the half-way mark and appears to be stalled ... again) and I'll let you know if I'm successful
