You may have accidentally hidden the icons.

To unhide desktop icons:

  1. Right-click on the desktop and open the "Arrange Icons By" sub-menu.
  2. In the sub-menu, click "Show Desktop Icons" to uncheck it.

Hope this helps

I have a HP Pavilion laptop and when you right click on the desktop the menu has View at the to. Click on that and the sub-menu says "show desktop icons" at the bottom. The laptop is running windows 10. thanks for the original answer though. It got me in the right direction.
