Using Windows 7, how do I run CHKDSK?

I've searched throughout the Control Panel and it's submenus and options but can find no means to initiate a scan for disk errors!

I did find chkdsk.exe in the Windows\System32 folder but when I double click it, the only response is a flash of the DOS {black, command prompt} screen! Is that the correct response?!

Is there no way to run [schedule] a scan disk [for errors] as there has been in earlier versions of Windows?!

It's done the same way in Windows 7 as it was in earlier versions of Windows:

  1. Open the "Computer" window
  2. Right-click on the drive in question
  3. Select the "Tools" tab
  4. In the Error-checking area, click <Check Now>.

    and here's the latest, just in from trying the above...    :-(

    1. Open the "Computer" window                                      DID THIS
    2. Right-click the icon of the hard disk drive in question.    DID THIS
    3. Left-click "Properties" at the bottom of the menu.          DID THIS
    4. Select the "Tools" tab.            COULD NOT DO THIS BECAUSE THERE IS NO TOOLS TAB

    I'm looking right at it!  Yes, it's windows 7. Yes, I followed the instructions. NO there is NO tools tab and don't ask me why.

    SO I am still waiting for help on how to run checkdisk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good grief, why is this so complicated?

    Well here's the deal - I have windows 7 on an Acer laptop. I am an experienced user. I open the computer icon and right click on the C drive, and there is NO TOOLS menu in the drop down menu. None. So what gives?

    This leaves me still looking for how to run checkdisk on windows 7. I checked in the accessories menu and in the maintenance menu - nothing. All I can find is defragmenter. 

    You used to be able to run it from DOS - Yes, I'm that old!  chkdsk and there was a switch for fixing damaged sectors.  was it /f  ?  Not sure about that part.

    Here is the real procedure for all of you that don't know everything.

    1. Open the "Computer" window
    2. Right-click the icon of the hard disk drive in question.
    3. Left-click "Properties" at the bottom of the menu.
    4. Select the "Tools" tab.
    5. Left-click "Check Now" in the error checking field at the top.
    6. Left-click the empty box to insert a check-mark next to "Automatically fix file system errors."
    7. Left-click "Start."
    8. Restart the computer.
