Using Windows 7, how do I run CHKDSK?

I've searched throughout the Control Panel and it's submenus and options but can find no means to initiate a scan for disk errors!

I did find chkdsk.exe in the Windows\System32 folder but when I double click it, the only response is a flash of the DOS {black, command prompt} screen! Is that the correct response?!

Is there no way to run [schedule] a scan disk [for errors] as there has been in earlier versions of Windows?!

It's done the same way in Windows 7 as it was in earlier versions of Windows:

  1. Open the "Computer" window
  2. Right-click on the drive in question
  3. Select the "Tools" tab
  4. In the Error-checking area, click <Check Now>.

    Step 2A should be inserted to say:

    2A- Left click Properties

    try this with windows 7 & 8

    Start>RUN

    type

    chkdsk e:/f

    here e: means e drive is usb pen drive.

    thats all.

    thanks for your answer but it isn't working.. I've tried several times and although I am able

    to complete 1 thru 4  chkdsk does not function upon restart so no chkdsk done.. is there

    another way or is one of my programs keeping it from running.. I have advanced system

    care ultimate and mcafee security  operating perhaps one of these are keeping it chkdsk

    from running.. if so would I just disable  one or the other?

    i've done what you have suggested and windows can't run a disk scan while it is operating the next prompt asks if you would like to schedule a disk scan and then nothing else appears to schedule or any thing else.. so is there another way or how does one schedule a disk scan?
