Change Power Settings

How to:

  • Set your computer to go (or not to go) to sleep after a specified period of inactivity. For more information, see Turn off a computer: frequently asked questions.
  • Adjust the brightness of your display.
  • Choose when to turn off the display during periods of inactivity.
  1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking Power Options.
  2. Under the plan that you want to change, click Change plan settings.
  3. On the Change settings for the plan page, choose the display and sleep settings that you want to use when your computer is running on battery (if applicable) and when it's plugged in.
  4. For more options, click “Change advanced power settings.”
  5. When you’re done click OK.

Thanks alot to you and all the others who responded to my inquiry.

I have NEVER(to my knowledge) used sleep mode with this or any of my computers but one day I had a brainstorm and manually put my PC to sleep, woke it up about an hour later and "wa_la" the problem had disappeared! That's not to say, knowing Microsoft, that it is fixed permanently & won't happen again, I am just thrilled to see it gone.

Obviously Microsoft is not attending to this problem.  I've heard of a program that simulates moving your mouse continuously that solves the problem, but having to resort to that is stupid.  My next computer will have to demonstrate an ability to remain awake forever, if need be, or I won't buy it.  I hate the thought, but Apple might be the only option.

I thought it was a Lenovo problem until I saw that someone with an HP had the same trouble.

Strangely enough it doesn't always do it.  There are times when it remains awake for long periods, usually with a combination of two programs running.  I just haven't figured out the combination.
