Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times

The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. Three times so far in two days. I had an identical problem with another security update for Microsoft Visual C. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Must I download and install this update manually for 32 and 64 bit systems to fix this problem (which was the fix for the installation problem with the Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175))? If not, what do I need to do to fix the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Hi brianchill84,

If you have a retail version of Windows, perform a repair install by completing the following steps:

  1. Log into Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Disable your antivirus, firewall and any other security program.
  3. Insert you Windows CD/DVD into the drive.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Select Install Now
  6. If asked, uncheck I want to help make Windows installation better and select Go online to getthe lasted updates for installation.
  7. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  8. Click on the Upgrade option.
  9. Once the installation is complete, enter you product key.
  10. Click on Use recommended settings.
  11. Select your time zone, date and time settings.
  12. Windows will then prepare your desktop.
  13. Check to make sure there are no files missing.

Please note, this process should not affect your personal files, however, as a precaution, make sure you have a backup of your data before you peroform these steps.

If you do not have a Windows retail disc, please create a new thread in this forum. Include the complete version of Windows you have installed, the make and model of your computer and any troubleshooting steps you've tried.

    I have the same problem with this update...it was supposedly downloaded/installed 6 times already and now again it is asking to be installed...how can I fix this problem?

    I had the same issue which started on June 15, 2011 and just solved it after reading the thread http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/169538-windows-update.html by MowGreenI called Toshiba tech support since my labtop is still under warranty and the tech wanted to format the computer I told him no thanks and started investigating my problem and this morning found this forum after identifying my issue was a Microsoft update.Thanks

    I am have problem installing all updates Intel & Microsoft.  This seems to be a Known problem But has not been FIXED?? Also now can't get Windows to start after loging with out clicking Ctrl+ALT+Del. What is going on??? Reply to ******@hotmail.com

    I also have this very frustrating issue. I have tried to manually install the update and as of this moment it has unsuccessfully attempted 34 times to install. Every time I shut my machine down it attempts to re install the update. When I look at the update history it shows 34 attempts and says it was successfully installed.

    We need this fixed.
