Windows 7 Update Stuck at 35% (Configuring Windows Updates 35% Complete)

Hi, I have a Windows 7 Ultimate laptop that is stuck at 35% complete update. After rebooting the computer, we get the Windows login sound, then it states it is configuring Windows updates at 35%. I have let this thing go overnight and yet nothing. Below is the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log. (I've even tried plugging the computer into an Ethernet jack to see if it would work, but still no go...)

    I wasn't able to remotely login in my WS, even though t was stuck at 35% (after resetting the WS when formerly it was stuck at 100% update). So I extracted the HDD and using a SATA to USB adapter I connected the drive to a USB port in a Windows 10 machine to no avail, W10 does not recognize W7 disks, so I moved the W7 disk to  USB port in a W2003 box  and imported the volume. Then I could access the file system and renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder. After this I reinstalled the disk in the offending W7 WS restarted it and after 1 hour (more or less) in the 35% state, BUM the login screen appeared...  :) :) :) :). What a wonderful moment!!!!

    Thank you for the suggestion. I ended up removing my HD and using another PC to rename 

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.  I placed the HD back in the PC and after 10 minutes stuck at 35 % again... I got a windows clean up message  and well that is some progress after five more minutes I got the logon screen. Wao you saved my life.

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution this folder got recreated and I deleted the original one almost 7 GB big.

    When I go to windows update it does not show anything at all. I can live with that.

    Exact same thing but got it fixed  by just wait at 35% for like 20 mins.

    I had the exact problem as described in your first paragraph.... did the disk cleanup, stuck at 100% stuck at 35%..... .. I restarted in safe mode...stuck at 35% again...I came up here to write a post , before I submitted it went back to check status and it was at the Cleaning phase...just as you said..... I found your post when I googled for "cleaning.. do not shut off computer" .....I read KenVrd's solution below and was resigned to having to try and get into DOS mode and try his suggestions... but when I went back to the computer it had got to the log in screen! I logged on, and then restarted from safe mode back to normal mode...started up fine!  And all window updates were successfully installed!

    I read on another forum that sometimes booting up in safe mode helps the update installation to finish... so maybe that's what happened here... anyway hope this gives some hope to some other person who gets into this trouble....

    Thanks ozegirl! I had this issue and restarted in safe mode with networking and let it go. After about an hour everything was updated and I could reboot from safe mode to normal mode.

    It took about 20 nail biting minutes for my computer to start "Cleaning Up", but it did and then BAM long on screen.  The only thing I did different from everyone else I think is that I only renamed the Download folder using the command prompt in the recovery menu.  I have a dell, so I used their Dell OS Recovery Tool.  Took a while, but all seems to be right with the world now.
