Shift key to release caps lock

Earlier versions of Windows contained a switch that would allow pressing either shift key to release the caps lock key, creating an action similar to that of a typewriter. I have not been able to find this switch in Windows 7. Can someone help?

Here's the REAL answer, not someone talking down to you. Shame on LVTravel, and shame on Adam-Support Engineer , who marked LVTravel's post as an answer.

  • Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Keyboards & Languages > Change Keyboard > Advanced Key Settings.

There you will find the setting to turn off Caps Lock with the SHIFT key, as it should be by default.

On my wnidows Vista laptop, All numbers and punctuation marks will only produce upper case. I assume my shift key is locked. Any answers ?

This thread refers to the Caps Lock key which affects only the letters.  Don't know how shift key could come to be locked.  Sounds like defective keyboard.

Need more information to answer you properly.

    • You might find an answer from reading the other posts in this thread.
    • I assume that you've tried pressing 'Caps Lock' again, which would unlock caps if you have it on.
    • If you have another USB keyboard* available, you could try plugging that in -- if you can, does it exhibit the same behaviour?
    • Some keyboards will have an indicator light to indicate whether Caps Lock is on (look for that).
    • Have you spilt any liquids on the keyboard? :)

    * Note: do not unplug/ plug in PS/2 keyboards with the power on: it's unlikely, but that can damage your system. Spilling liquids on keyboards is another practise best avoided ;)

I think you'd be surprised: Microsoft Insists On Changing Things (TM); I myself have been happy this thread still exists, it's been useful for me on more than one occasion.

Not all information has a sell-by date.
