How do I finalize a disk (CD-R and DVD+/-R) using Windows ?

Hi:

How do I "finalize" a disk (CD-R and DVD+/-R) using Windows ?

I want to finalize the disk...not just close the session/disk.

From what I have read in Windows Help, "closing" allows me to write to the disk later.

Is this true, if the disk is just R, not RW ?

I have burned JPEG images (.jpg files) to CD-R and DVD+R disks.

When I try to play them in my Sony CD/DVD player, it won't recognize the disks.

Sony's user manual says that the disks must be "finalized", not just "closed".

How do I do that with Windows ?

I treid finalizing these disks with Roxio Creator Basic, but it doesn't do anything, except eject the disks.

Windows still says that the disks have free space, and the DVD player can't recognize them.

From what I understand, if the disk is finalized, the will show no free space available.  Is this correct ?

Note:  The disks work correctly on my HP laptop which uses Vista 32-bit Home Premium.  I can view the JPEG images.

    If you would use your brain, you would see that Microsoft is intentionally confusing the two terms. They say close or finalize when they only mean close.

    This is just another attempt from Microsoft to get people accustomed to their way of doing things regardless of whether it works for the individual/company or not.

    The link you insist on pointing to does not tell anyone how to finalize a disc after burning it.  So stop misleading people and wasting their time.

    A related issue that I ran into (may have posted some time ago), is that it doesn't allow you to create a Master disk.

    I am using Vista 32-bit Home Premium.

    Why won't the question get answered? This is so bizarre. How does one finalize a CD or DVD using Windows Explorer? It's really not that complicated a question, but it seems like people are trying to confuse it and avoid the question. Is there some kind of strange politics going on with closing vs. finalizing a CD or DVD?

    Yes, it's a Microsoft thing.

    Closing sessions allows the use on other Windows 7 systems, but not necessarily on other devices and operating systems.

    Hi:

    I have not used Ashampoo, but have read comments from others regarding it.

    It is supposed to allow you to be able to finalize a disk, not just end a session.

    Once a disk is finalized...that's it...you can no longer write to it.

    After finalization, if you right-click on the disk icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu,

    it will show that there is zero free-space available.

    As ChrisWeber suggested...make backups of the files first.  Then, use Ashampoo to create and finalize the disks.   Having one or more Backup Copies prior to burning is the safest bet.
