How do I finalize a disk (CD-R and DVD+/-R) using Windows ?

Hi:

How do I "finalize" a disk (CD-R and DVD+/-R) using Windows ?

I want to finalize the disk...not just close the session/disk.

From what I have read in Windows Help, "closing" allows me to write to the disk later.

Is this true, if the disk is just R, not RW ?

I have burned JPEG images (.jpg files) to CD-R and DVD+R disks.

When I try to play them in my Sony CD/DVD player, it won't recognize the disks.

Sony's user manual says that the disks must be "finalized", not just "closed".

How do I do that with Windows ?

I treid finalizing these disks with Roxio Creator Basic, but it doesn't do anything, except eject the disks.

Windows still says that the disks have free space, and the DVD player can't recognize them.

From what I understand, if the disk is finalized, the will show no free space available.  Is this correct ?

Note:  The disks work correctly on my HP laptop which uses Vista 32-bit Home Premium.  I can view the JPEG images.

    Are you trolling?

    You almost have to be considering there's an entire thread here of people pointing out how what you're talking about is without doubt NOT finalizing the CD.

    If you are trolling, you guys should stop.  You're going to seriously get someone in trouble by leading them to believe a CD has been finalized when it hasn't.  It's a security violation that could cost someone their job, and it's really not funny.

    Ok, I'm years late to the game, but I may have found the answer to your question. I had the same problem. I could close, but not finalize a disc. Sorry if you have moved on now from Vista, but maybe this is similar in future operating systems? 

    The bad news is that for your individual disc that you are trying to finalize, I don't think you can ever do it. When you initially set up to make that disc, you were given a semi-hidden option of how you want to actually write the files to the disc. You unknowingly selected  "Live File System". What you wanted was "Mastered".  So stick in a brand new CD-R and when you get the popup: Prepare this blank disc, click the small bottom left carrot for "Show formatting options". Now you will see the two options (this is where my mind blew up). Select "Mastered". 

    Now when you are done selecting files to burn, there is no "close" option, there is only a "burn" option. You don't have to search for it, it's right on the front of the window. When you burn, your disc I think it should be finalized. The reason I say think is that you can actually still re-add songs to this disc, but you have to re-burn it. So it will not show up for me as zero room on the disc. 

    So give it a shot and let me know your player now recognizes it as "finalized" or not.

    Is anybody really listening to Dale Brandt???

    I have the same problem... I cannot FINALIZE a disc.

    This is a very simple and direct.  How does one FINALIZE a disc?

    The questions that you guys ask him are irrelevant!  The question is simple... HOW DO YOU FINALIZE A DISC?
