How do I finalize a disk (CD-R and DVD+/-R) using Windows ?

Hi:

How do I "finalize" a disk (CD-R and DVD+/-R) using Windows ?

I want to finalize the disk...not just close the session/disk.

From what I have read in Windows Help, "closing" allows me to write to the disk later.

Is this true, if the disk is just R, not RW ?

I have burned JPEG images (.jpg files) to CD-R and DVD+R disks.

When I try to play them in my Sony CD/DVD player, it won't recognize the disks.

Sony's user manual says that the disks must be "finalized", not just "closed".

How do I do that with Windows ?

I treid finalizing these disks with Roxio Creator Basic, but it doesn't do anything, except eject the disks.

Windows still says that the disks have free space, and the DVD player can't recognize them.

From what I understand, if the disk is finalized, the will show no free space available.  Is this correct ?

Note:  The disks work correctly on my HP laptop which uses Vista 32-bit Home Premium.  I can view the JPEG images.

    Hi:

    But the whole point is that Microsoft is using the term "Finalize" when the disk is not getting finalized.

    It is just being "Closed"  A DVD must be finalized in order to be readable by a DVD player...not a computer.

    Another related issue is that the user is supposed to be able to use the "Mastering" process when creating a disk.  If you select this option, it fails...always.

    Hi:

    I agree !

    Microsoft's links tell you how to CLOSE a session...not how to FINALIZE it.

    DVD Players (Sony, for sure) will not play the disk, unless it is finalized.

    They make it clear in the User Manual...the disk must be finalized.

    In addition, I have CLOSED disks with your software, and have been able to write (add)

    to them at a later date.  If the disk is FINALIZED, you can't write to the disk.

    You can also see if the disk is finalized by goint to  Start > Computer

    and then placing your mouse/trackpad pointer over the drive that has the disk in it.

    If the disk is finalized, the Free Space will be 0 bytes.

    Yes I did download the basic software.

    I have not however provided my email at any point, nor registered it.

    It did what I needed without my having to.

    Hi:

    Be careful !

    As I mentioned in my previous replies to folks on April 28th, 2013,

    Roxio seems to have some nice User Friendly  utilities.  The version that I have is "old"

    so I can't tell you the prons/cons of their latest software...but...if you finalize a disk

    or burn a rewriteable disk that is not finalized (you want ot be able to add files at a later date/time)...you cannot access the files on those disks...unless... you use Roxio's program ! 

    You are stuck !   The disk is unreadble by other programs.   I do not like this !!!
