The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer from task manager.

Hope this helps!

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

Hope his helps.

    Here's another option:

go to Microsoft.com, using your MS Edge or browser.

when MS,com opens look at the bottom of the page and you should see a line that says: Contact Us. Click on it and a page at MS.com should open with a big question area that says "What can we help you with?

Then just below that, to the left under a small picture you'll see "Accounts and Billing, click on it.

A window should open where it says: Manage your account on the WEB site Click on it and a window will open  that will show your Microsoft account information.

If nothing is there then you probably no longer have a MS account.

So you should create a new one at Microsoft.com.

When I do this my account information shows up BUT not the local account info since it's NOT set up on the web!

Your web account for Microsoft should show up!

Now if you see your account back up to the last window and go down to

Windows, Office, etc and click on it and a window will open where you can Chat with a tech to ask them to help you reset you MS user account on your PC and get rid of the "local" user account.

Ran this but it did not help.... it just came up with 'you need a MS account to sync', which I have and was the original account on my laptop but now, since i created a new local account, (yes, with full admin priveledge), I cannot log back in with my original MS account, nor is there any sign of that account in Control Panel; when I look to manage users only the new local account is there.

This issue with the Start Button and NO Modern Apps working ONLY happened after I updated from the original WIndows 10 to the 2511 build - I have tried pretty much everything that has been suggested without any success & I wish I had NOT created the new Local account as that has onlymade things worse. :(
