Windows Start button not working

The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer​ from task manager.

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

    Hi,

    This has not worked either! I ran the MS Security Scanner and found no virus or malware, (was pretty sure my system was clean as I keep my security up to date & run a full scan a couple of times a week).

    This problem with the Start Button and NO Modern Apps working ONLY happened directly after I instaled the 1511 update of Windows 10. It is extremely frustrating as doing that wiped all System Restore points and I do not want to re-install from scratch and lose all of my software as some of it is very, very hard to obtain & a lot of syncs & set-ups with music hardware I use will take me weeks to do again, (and that's if I can ever get back to where I was)!

    I wonder if other peoples problems with the Start Button & Modern Apps has only happened after the 1511 Windows 10 update?

    I HOPE MS can sort this problem out soon as not being able to use any Modern Apps is annoying & means the functionality of my Laptop is very, very limited! I couldn't even print a document without first searching around the web for my printer software/driver and installing again!

    As much as I hated WIndows 8 I WISH I had not upgraded to 10!

    I would suggest you to run Microsoft safety scanner to check and remove any virus or malware which may be causing the issue.
