The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer from task manager.

Hope this helps!

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

Hope his helps.

I solved my start menu problem by creating a new account using one of the two other local accounts on my computer (my husband and son), one of which was an Administrator account. (The computer would not allow me as Administrator to open another account.  Not sure why. Perhaps it had something to do with the start menu problem.)  Nevertheless I created a new  Administrator account for myself, copied files to it and eventually deleted my old account.   I chose the option to save all my files. No more start menu problems.  Everything is working properly. My stress level has been reduced from 10 - 0!    I hope this info helps someone else.

    Thank you.

Answering your question: no, I'm not using a registry cleaner.

After reverting to 8.1 and reinstalling afterwards the 10, it is working well (but that doesn't mean it won't repeat in a few days, because that is what happened in the past!).

    We'll see.

    Best regards,

    Rui

    To fix Windows 10  Start button and taskbar icons not working, there is only one sure safe way to do this.  You have re-install all the Microsoft metro apps, only the ones that came with the program.  Go here for step by step;
