Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    thnx, this script worked perfect.

    the files now no longer sho under "other media". what i've actually been trying is to get .mkv files playing on my samsung tv. the .mkv files weren't even showing on the tv before i ran this script. so i am 1 step closer to getting them working. although they now show up on the tv, i get an error saying it doesnt support the file format. also in windows media player it doesnt have a time displayed as to how long that item is. file works fine if i double click it from the library on the pc.

    any feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    This will likely be due to the fact that the TV doesn't support the mkv format.

    I have the same issue with my MediaGate upnp media player, sadly it's a few years old and mkv containers aren't supported.

    You may be able to use some sort of media transcoder like Twonky, Tversity, or XBMC. But it really depends on the streaming device you're using, and what formats it supports.
