Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    This did work.  Thank you very much.  

    Note I had to reboot and  rebuild wmp db files by clearing all the wmdb files at %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player  and then restarting.    This added all the files clean when I restarted wmp.  Not a bad idea to rebuild this from time to time anyway.

    Yea.....I already have those registry entries and WMP still WILL NOT ALLOW THE ADDITION OF MKV FILES INTO THE PLAYER! I can successfully right click the file and select "Play with Windows Media Player" without error. I have the Matroska splitter installed as well as any codecs it supplied in addition to Shark007 codecs. I can play any video file without any issues I simply CANNOT get an MKV into the GOD AWFUL WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER!
