Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    funny enough this worked for me too.... 

    after struggling for a while i managed to get the .mkv files in the WMP library. it played fine on my pc but still wouldnt show when streaming to my xbox. Renaming movie.mkv to movie.mkv.mpeg fixed that issue. Now i can watch the movie.mkv.mpeg on my xbox, only issue i have now is i am unable to fast foward or rewind.

    Hi! This worked perfectly for me, thank you very much!

    I had a look in my 'Other' and found lots of files that I would prefer were properly categorized into 'Video' or 'Music', can a similar code be used for the following?

    .flac .aac .ogg .aif

    .mov .ogm .3gp .flv
