Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    Tim, wmp was able to play mkv files before applying .reg keys; after, it was not anymore. Removing the keys fixed it.

    I found out that after renaming the .mkv file to .mpg (and only .mpg extension works) they disappear from the wmp "Other media"  library (and I see and play them on my TV) but wmp crashes when trying to open the library folder where they reside.

    Any clue?

    What's the full error message and exactly which DivX codecs did you install?
