How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    Joseph: do the movie files show up if you move them back out of the newly created folder? (to the root of the video library)

    Please check if the permissions of the folder are set correctly, so that the files can be accessed from another PC. You may even need to add read privileges for the Everyone group to the folder.

    I had found some other information online and was able to get every format but MKV to show up.  I still can't figure out that part.  The other movies not showing up was a permissions issue which was quickly resolved after I found detailed instructions.  What I don't get is that after doing the MKV thing in notepad and following those instructions it still will not send those videos to the TV via media player.  Even after media player will play them.  Thanks for the response by the way.  I will await your reply to see if you have any more ideas.  If anything we can run teamviewer sometime if you are interested.  This way you can see whats what via remote.

    I gave freely controlled and checked the media streaming options.

    yes teamviewer is a good idea

    under windows7 could help me your regscript. but here I no longer come

    Daniel: I have just tried the script on my Windows 8 system and it's working fine there. I see that you've quoted the 64-bit version of the script, so I suggest that you also try the 32-bit version (see my answer on the first page of this topic). Remember to restart WMP afterwards.

    If that doesn't help either, you may want to try resetting WMP's library. First note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play counts, and possibly ratings too. Then, follow these steps:

    • Reboot the PC.
    • Go to Start, type services.msc in the Search field, and press Enter. In Services, find the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. If its status is Started, double-click the service and click Stop.
    • Go to Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in the Search field, and press Enter. This folder will open up in Windows Explorer.
    • In this folder, delete the Media Player folder. If you can't see the folder, then it's probably hidden. Set Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and to show protected system files.
    • Start WMP, your library will have been reset and will be rebuilt. Check if your MKV files appear in the library now.
