Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    It would appear that my desktop has (or at least thinks it has) two WMP programs on it.

    This is the case on Windows x64: both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of WMP will be present. For MKV files to play in the 64-bit version, you also need to have the 64-bit version of the required codecs installed. I guess that's why the MKV files didn't play in one of the WMP versions on your system.

    Hi Tim

    Thanks for the reply. I have sorted it now I think. It would appear that my desktop has (or at least thinks it has) two WMP programs on it. I have associated all MKV files with the 'second' WMP and they play fine now.

    I added both Reg scripts again and restarted everything and in WMP 'applied media changes' several times.

    TBH I didn't really know what I was doing but it all works now!

    Will probably have to post something after another update comes down and causes chaos again :)

    Nick: have you checked if the .mkv files are in WMP's Other media section instead of in Videos? In that case, removing the files from the library and then restoring them (Tools - Advanced - Restore deleted library items) should do the trick.

    As for the WMP error when double-clicking .mkv files, what's the full error message?
