Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

"Permissions"=dword:0000000f

"Runtime"=dword:00000007

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

"mkv"="video"

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    Thank you for your response... I added the Windows RegistryLine and I took out the blank line spaces that the copy and paste added.... then it sucessfully added the values to the registry.

    I rebooted just as a precaution... and I am getting the following error...

    Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

    Any ideas what codec we may need to install??  or what else might be causing the problem.

    Hi,

    Open an empty text file.

    Copy the contents from my post, from the"Windows Registry..." up to "mka"="audio" at the end.

    Paste that into the text file and save it with any name you like.

    Now open Windows explorer and locate the text file you just saved.

    Change its extension from .txt to .reg.

    Now you are good to go.

    Greetngs...

    I have tried both scripts in this posting on a Windows 7 64 bit machine... when I double click on it I get the error that it is "not a binary script"  what am I missing??
