If your computer is having problems finding and installing operating system updates, try using a Windows Update troubleshooter to fix the problem

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Fix problems with Windows Update.

    In other words,

    Do the following...

    • Start
    • Type "Services"
    • Under services, find "Windows Update" service and click "Stop"
    • Go back to Start, type "Run"

    -  Type %windir%  (this is a shortcut to going to C:\ProgramFiles\Windows\SoftwareDistribution)

    • Look for the folder  "Software Distribution", right click on it, you should now be able to rename to "SDOld"
    • Go back to Services, restart "Windows Update" services

You should be able to start windows updates now by clicking on check for updates.

"Remember, if you have a bootleg copy of Windows, this may not work as they have disabled some options for windows updates"

    Hope this helps :)
