Ok Now I have tried to install from windows update and manually trying to install this update KB2468871

It is not working and it keeps giving me an error

Error code 643.

Finally after weeks of frustration I was able to fix this mess, none of the advice microsoft provided worked, uninstalling reinstalling, using microsoft .net removal tool, microsoft fixit, disabling UAC, and numerous other things which did nothing at all.

The source of this problem with KB2468871 is that a .dll needed for it to install is not present for whatever reason, copying and inserting the .dll where it needs to be will allow you to install this update.

Download the KB2468871 update here:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3556

Try to install it, so that it extracts the needed .dll

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.Xml.Serialization\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089

Go to there and you should see the .dll file "System.Xml.Serialization.dll" If you can't find it do a search for it.

Copy it.

Paste it here C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319

And paste it here:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319

Install the KB2468871 update you downloaded earlier.

    Thank you so much! I copied the .dll from my XP 32bit desktop to my windows 7 64bit laptop. It works.

    I'm glad it worked for you too. Really, if Microsoft can't fix the problem, the DLL should be available for download so people who don't happen to have a spare 32bit W7 computer can still solve the problem.

    Windows 7 64bit - same problem as everyone else here.

    I'm not sure I understand the instruction "Try to install it, so that it extracts the needed .dll" becasue I try LOL@Microsoft's solution but the directory  C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.Xml.Serialization does not exist, and neither does the dll file of the same name.

    So I obtained the file System.Xml.Serialization.dll from comparable location on my 32Bit Windows 7 PC (that had no problems installing this update) and copied it to these locations

    C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319

    C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319

    Then ran the install process again (executing the downloaded patch NDP40-KB2468871-v2-x64 and the outcome was... SUCCESS

    So if you cannot find System.Xml.Serialization.dll where LOL@Microsoft found it, the solution seems to be to get hold of a copy of it from C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319 on a computer that has had the fix successfully applied.
