Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

This is the Servicing Stack update. The servicing stack is the Windows component which handles the installation of Updates, Features in the Control Panel and the installation of Service Packs.
This updated version is needed to install the Final Version of the Service Pack 1!

Yeah I'm skipping this one too - no M$ doc at this point, and if it's truly to enable future updates I'll deal with it when documented and needed. If M$ wants me to install and test some beta or RC version(s) of SP1 for my Win7 Pro x64 I'll skip it then too.

It is not the SP1 Beta, nor SP1 RC. It is the update, installed by the WUSignUpTool and a pre-requiste to download the SP1 RC via WU. Hovewer, using of beta / not released software is not recommended to a standard home user, who is not prepared to deal with bugs.
I've hidden mine but when I inspect it in hidden updates KB976902 says "Update Type: Important", not "Update Type: Recommended". OMG what a mess.
Anyways, why would you think this is a "pre-requisite" for a future download of a RC-status software anyway? Why would I want to download SP1 RC?? If anything, i would download the final release...
