Windows 7 (KB976902) to enable future updates.

Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902.  It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it.  I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results.  I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta.  I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.

Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.

However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

    "On 09 May 2011, KB976902 was replaced by KB2533552"

    I had to reinstall Windows 7 RTM just the other day - sure enough "KB976902" was installed prior to Service Pack 1.

    However the new KB2533552 - "An update that prevents a "0x0000034" error message when you try to install Windows 7 SP1....." is what should install.

    KB253352:  "This article replaces Knowledge Base article 976902. "  yet look what appeared in 'Installed Updates' but KB976902!   What is going on with the old version appearing?

    The hotfix is only for the situation if other updates are also waiting to install at restart along with SP1. 

    I have no problems with installing manually following Windows 7 RTM install:

    KB949104 = Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.xxx   - RESTART

    KB2425227 - pre-SP1, always listed. - RESTART

    KB976932 - Windows 7 SP1 -  RERELEASED in 2015.
