What is Microsoft Silverlight and why do I need it?

Can someone explain the benefits of MS Silverlight (both Pros and Cons)? Sorry to ask and I might be able to figure it out if I had time to open it up and see exactly each feature does, but just from opening the program up for the first time; I'm not sure that I need it or what it is for exactly? Thanks in advance for any insight someone can give me.

You need it if you want to go to web pages that use it. If you don't,

you don't need it.

As far as I'm concerned, you should have it, since it gives you the

ability to go to web pages you might want.

    Let me add some fun at MicroSoft's expense to the dialogue.

    I was doing some basic system maintenance, including uninstalling applications I don't use, when I noticed all this Silverlight 5h!t scattered around. I've never knowingly used Silverlight, so I googled the simple question, "What is Silverlight?" Naturally, it led me to this discussion. (FWIW, I immediately discount just about anything a Microsoft-employed moderator -- MVP may mean "mostly vague promises" -- might say about the value of any MS application.)  

    I finally broke down and visited silverlight.net (returned as "http://i1.silverlight.net/content/downloads/SL5Final_RTW.docx" in the browser address bar), as advised in one answer. Here's what I saw on my browser screen:

    An error occurred while processing your request.

    <snark>Of course, the error message helped me fix that problem, too. </snark>
