Suddenly all my desktop icons have green check marks on them. What does it mean? How do I fix them?

Do you use norton 360? Norton -> Settings -> Backup Settings -> Backup Status Overlays -> OFF -> Apply. After you run your next backup (you can do it manually) the check marks will disappear.

On my pc in explorer, Onedrive's folders now all have green checkboxes so my guess is onedrv or other cloud servc is source.
I have the green check marks and I do not use either Norton nor one drive. I recall quite some time ago, long before Windows 10, there was a utility to get rid of them.
The green check marks take many forms, red check marks, horizontal lines. It is just some pattern pasted over top of every icon. I can get rid of them temporarily with a refresh. I think this must be some kind of Windows 10 bug, on top of a deliberate arrow on top of every shortcut.
The answer is very valid, but may be it doesn't apply in _your_ case.
The green checkmark is usually added by OneDrive to indicate synced items. If that's not it, you may have to use Autoruns and inspect the Overlay handlers registered in your system.
