Green check marks on desktop icons

Suddenly all my desktop icons have green check marks on them.  What does it mean?  How do I fix them?

Hi,

Do you use norton 360? Norton -> Settings -> Backup Settings -> Backup Status Overlays -> OFF -> Apply.  After you run your next backup (you can do it manually) the check marks will disappear.

    Still, no one (hello Microsoft) has explained how the green check marks got there in the first place.  I use McAfee security.  No Norton, no Windows Defender.  Refresh cleared it up for me.  Again, what causes them?

    I have windows 10, and web root security, the green check marks happened twice to me. I just did it by accident, I just right click on the desk top, and left click on refresh took them right away!!!!
