Win 7 Sound recorder- audio recording device cannot be found

I tried all 3 methods & nothing worked :(

My Microphone works fine on Skype, but not on pennytel or Sound Recorder :( R these 2 related problems?

**Method 1. Run the Record Sound Troubleshooter:**Open the Record Sound troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio recording.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.Let's cross check if the Sound Device and the Recording Microphone is enabled.

This method worked for me but there is a catch. If you are using the front panel plug for your microphone, sound recorder requires that you enable the rear input (set as default in Control Panel>Sound). You can then record (although remember your microphone is physically connected to the front panel).

Meanwhile other applications(Counter-Strike Source, MS Powerpoint, Ventrilo all confirmed) will require you re-enable the front panel plug (set as default in control Panel>Sound).  This is probably just an oversight in the OS, since voice recorder has been simplified and is a minor utility. If you wish to use sound recorder then just remember to switch the input to the rear panel (using Control Panel not actually unplugging the wire).

It might suit you to just use the rear panel input for simplicity.

Im having the exact same problem as the original poster describes.

Also on a Dell Xps 420.

I havent found a solution unfortunatly, windows 7 just doenst see the recording device, vista worked fine.

In the link the poster describes the problem as possibly being "the default Microsoft IDT High Definition Audio driver, which was not compatible with his on board sound device (Intel® Desktop Boards with IDT audio.

My dell xps 420 system also has a onboard sound device but im not technical enough to find the correct possible intel driver-set.

Besides that ill probably install the wrong one and break everything, at least i have sound now luckily.

By posting this im hoping someone can help with either the correct driver set or another fix perhaps.

same problem and same story as everyone else.  ive spent a lot of time with this, and this is what i concluded, but have yet to try.  tomorrow!  i have audio programs owned and backed-up on disk, i have had and use these with other OS systems (XP, VISTA).  but, for some reason NOT ONE of my recording programs, (CUBASE, GOLDWAVE, ACID PRO, CD+G RECORDERS), are giving me the same issues you all are haveing, from error messages saying no recording device detected!  i have tryed everything that was posted above before and after i entered this Forum.  i tryed tech. help. ha.  ive tryed installing and updating new drivers.  nope.  i feel all ya pain.  i bought this pc cuz i started college, majoring in audio/video programing, at a technical institute.  i dont have any use for it if it is not compatible to my essential needs.

PROBLEM: 

WINDOWS 7 BLOWS.  IT IS BLOCKING THIS CAPABILITY OF BEING ABLE TO RECORD INTERNALLY!  WHY?  COPY-WRITE PROTECTION.  THEY ARE PROTECTING ARTISTS FROM USERS TO BE ABLE TO RECORD SOUND FROM A MOVIE, DVD, CD.  SO THIS IS A NEW BLOCK THAT EITHER THEY'LL KEEP BLOCKING OR MAYBE WHEN THEY REALIZE HOW FU**ED UP THAT IS THEY WILL SEND AN AUTO UPDATE.  HIGHLY UNLIKELY.

SOLUTION BUT NOT YET TESTED:

EITHER:

1. BUY AN 1/8TH INCH SIZE AUDIO CABLE- MALE-TO-MALE-STEREO (NOT MONO)~~~PLUG ONE END INTO YOUR AUDIO OUT,(SPEAKERS/HEADPHONES;GREEN) AND PLUG THE OTHE END INTO YOUR RECORD IN (MIC;RED/PINK)  IF YOU HAVE A LAPTOP THIS WIRE SHOULDNT HAVE TO BE ANY LONGER THAN LIKE 5 INCHES.  WHAT THIS WILL DO IS LOOP THIS BLOCK.  PLAY YOUR SONG IN BACKGROUND, IT WILL THEN GO OUT INTO WHAT "WOULD BE" YOUR SPEAKERS, BUT NOW THAT SHORT WIRE IS GOING TO YOUR MIC INPUT TRICKING THE SYSTEM INTO BELIEVING THAT THE SOUNDS COMING IN ARE NOT INTERNAL PC SOUNDS, THEREFORE ALOWING YOU TO RECORD BUT MAKE SURE YOUR RECORDING DEVICE IS SET TO MIC.  GET IT?  IF HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS OR EVEN EXTRA MIC INPUTS ARE A NEED FOR YOU, THEN INVEST IN SOME 1/8TH INCH SIZE STEREO SPLITTERS.  ILL CHECK THIS OUT TOMORROW AND GET BACK. 

2.  INTERNAL/EXTERNAL SOUNDCARD WHICH WILL "LOOP" THE BLOCK.

WINDOWS 7 BLOWS!!!
