Win 7 Sound recorder- audio recording device cannot be found

Fresh install (new drive) of Win 7 Hiome Premium 64 bit on Dell XPS 420 Quad Core.  When I launch sound recorder it gives an error that audio recording device cannot be found.  Mic is plugged in front jack.  This worked with Vista.  I enabled show disabled devices and sho disconnected devices.  Any ideas?  I also tried rear mic jack.  I scanned for hardware changes.

I did the things you mentioned above:

1.) method 1:  Windows 7 responded that it could not identify the problem

2.) method 2:  checked the show disabled devices and still no devices appear.  It still says no audio devices installed under the recording tab.

3.) method 3:  attempted to update driver and Win 7 reports I have the most up to date driver already

Any ideas?

There is really no other solution than a better driver for the device.

    I know this is old but in case someone else comes across it, what i found worked was right click on the speaker symbol at the bottom right, click recording devices/recording tab/then right click ANYWHERE in the middle/  then show disabled devices will come up, check it and then voila it will work.

    You can also record after this by going to start/all programs/accesories/soundrecorder and it will record what your computer "hears"

    here is the solution:

    First, go to the Control Panel and click on the Sound icon. Now, click on the Recording tab. Once in the tab, right-click within it (it dosn't matter on what iten on  the list you click) and choose Show Disabled Devices. Now, Stereo Mix should show up in the Recording tab (if your sound card offers Stereo Mix). Click Stereo Mix and choose Properties. Under Device Usage, change the choice from "Don't use this device (disable)" to "Use this device (enable)."

    Yes!. The driver...for the microphone is a 3rd paty one, and, it has not been installed, yet.

     You yourself have confessed to the 'freshness' of the OS (operating system) having been installed.

    As a 'rule of thumb', and years of expeience...............people doing a Reinstallation of the OS......DO tend to LEAVE a driver/software porgram or two....in their haste...to get their computer 'up-n-running again.

    The fact that the Microphone USED TO WORK....off the FRONT JACK, is a good indicator to the truth of this matter. (The jack works, so the driver has to be MISSING.)

    **Shekhar:**Thanks for solutions 1 & 2, I got my missing internal mic back.  Number 3 is a last resort. Solution 1 brought it back!

     I restored My Acer Aspire 5334 from a system crashed ( virus) and I  with the Acer recovery discs. The internal mic worked, until I added a bluetooth headset. I think I selected the Bluetooth as default. I tried system restore and then tried MS FIX IT. Also it can't detect ext mic or fix it. However It did give me the forum and this solution.

    Suggestion: It would have been very helpful if the Disconnected and Disabled device options were either  a check box or radio button shown in the recording tab area, instead of right clicking to expose the dialog box with the choices.  This would have saved time and worry, since my disabled devices do not show up in device manager. I, being a computer tech, would not have thought of right clicking to bring up the dialog box and I am sure less knowledgeable would not have thought of it either. 

    Better yet, would be to show the devices and their status by default, instead of hiding them. Show them just like the device status is shown in device manager with no dialog box at all.
