Windows 7 Windows Media Player 12 won't update the library when I add an item to the library, additionally when I delete a file from it's containing folder the media player doesn't remove it from the library. Can you help please?

If all these steps suggested above doesnt work close WMP12 stop all running services and try to open : "C:\Users"Your Username" \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player" and delete all the contained files (maybe copy them to another folder for a backup).
Afterwards open WMP 12 press F3 and the library index works how it is supposed to!

What's the full path to this folder? Is this folder listed as a library location when you click Organize in WMP's library and select Manage libraries - Music? Do you see any text next to the folder's path there?
Also, do you get the same issue with files in your default My Music folder?
Path is "D:\downloads\tv\__shared", and it's videos not music. It's the only folder in the 'Video' library, and it frequently show's 'unresponsive' next to it when you do organize -> manage -> videos, but then so do Music and Pictures which are the default ones. It's also the 'default save location' for video.
I don't typically add or remove files to the music library often so can't tell if it has any issues. I currently don't even have any music in the library since due to this problem I have to rebuild often, and doing that for all my music takes forever. I also don't have any need to share music with other devices as I do video with the xbox.

WMP has never visibly crashed, and there are no WMP related errors in the log(s).
The problem isn't just new files moved to the folder not showing up. Often files that have been deleted or moved out of a folder that's included in the library will continue to show up until deleted manually from the library, or WMP is opened and closed several times, or I move files out of and back into the folder. In the worst cases the old files hang around undeletable and require rebuilding the library / deleting the wmdb files to clear.
Windows media library just seems to have a lot of problems keeping the 'library' in sync with folder contents. That said, I'll take WMP/Library any day over the nightmare that is iTunes...
