Windows 7 and Bose Companion 5 speaker system losing sound intermittently.

I'm using the Windows 7 Ultimate RC, bought the full version, just haven't installed yet.  I also am using Bose Companion 5 speakers.  Asus M3A79-T Deluxe motherboard, and an AMD Phenom II processor.  My problem is this, my speakers work for an amount of time, usually less than a day, then all of a sudden they'll stop working, either in the middle of playing World of Warcraft, watching a video, whatever, all of a sudden they just stop working.  The speakers are still listed as default in the sound settings and are still valid in hardware manager, I can unplug the USB and plug it back in and it shows up as working, etc. but no sound comes out until I reboot the computer.  I am not using a hub and have tried different ports, please help.  I've read around and other people are having issues with the AMD cool 'n quiet function acting up, but mine is off by default in bios, and i've also ran the AMD power monitor, both have no effect, I still lose sound completely and randomly.

I'm now 24 hours without any sound dropping!!!!!, never seen before, the sound always dropped after about 30 mins. I'd tried using an external USB 2 hub without any success. 

However, this solution seems to work great. It's been over a year since I had the pc and I always had this problem of the sound dropping out from the bose speakers. To get the sound back I had to disconnect the USB chord, then plug it back in again. I also contacted the motherboard manufacturer (Gigabyte) who told me to reinstall windows???

Anyway thanks to this solution the problem appears to have gone.

***SOLUTION***

(Solution for Windows 7, but I'm sure these options can be found in previous versions of the operating system)

 

1. head to control panel (set view to icons)
2. power options
3. Under "Preferred plans" which is under the page "Select a power plan", I put my computer on "High performance" mode, but the solution is within "Change plan settings"
4. Hit "Change plan settings", and then click "change advanced power settings".
5. Under your "Active" power setting (mine was High performance), scroll down to "USB Settings", and click the "+" to expand your options
6. hit the "+" next to "USB selective suspend setting", and then set it to "Disabled" click apply and then OK.
7. Voila.

 

I called BOSE, and they were unaware of said issue, but this seems to be a pretty simple fix!

 

 

 

 

I have Companion 5, and have had my sound gradually begin cutting out after a few weeks, then a few days, and until recently, a few seconds of playing.  

I would unplug/replug the USB cable from my USB hub to get the sound started--but like I said, it had degenerated to just a few seconds of sound.  There is a Microsoft KB here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484031 but of course, they got rid of the hotfix and won't let you download it.

I read this entire forum thread, looking for answers.  I NEED my music to work!

I did all the Power Plan fixes, the Sound Device properties, etc... to no avail.  Two options are on the table for me now: I just unplugged the subwoofer and let it rest for 10 seconds before plugging it back in again, and sound is now playing, for about 5 minutes.  That is an AMAZING improvement over two seconds.  The second option is to buy a PCI-E USB card--and that, unfortunately, appears to be my last option... that is, until Windows 8 comes out. :(

I hope Microsoft will genuinely pay attention to the fact this thread has been constantly updated with complaints for the past three years.

Try getting a cheap USB 2.0 PCi card (use only speaker on of  the slots and leave the rest empty), it worked flawless for me. It's been at least a year now, no problem here.
