Local Disk Q:\ Access Denied; 0 Bytes; File System: [Blank]

After a fresh new installation of windows 7, local disk Q appeared in windows explorer (only!). windows is unable to format or delete it, or even identify the file system. my attempts to take ownership fail as i get a message saying "access denied."

how do i get rid of this drive (Q)?

Hey Shinder,

Make sure that you follow the steps below to give full control:

Let’s try giving permissions to the drive and check

Right-click the drive and select Properties.

Click on the Security tab.

Click Advanced in the lower right.

In the Advanced Security Settings window that pops up, click on the Owner tab.

Click Edit.

Click Other users or groups.

Click Advanced in the lower left corner.

Click Find Now.

Scroll through the results and double-click on your current user account.

Click OK to all of the remaining windows except the first Properties window.

Select your user account from the list up top and click Edit.

Select your user account from the list up top again and then in the pane below, check Full control under Allow, or as much control as you need.

You’ll get a security warning, click Yes. 　

Also check in Disk management whether it is showing up or not. If yes, right click on the drive and format it.

  1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. In the Navigation pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.
  3. Right-click the volume that you want to format, and then click Format.
  4. To format the volume with the default settings, in the Format dialog box, click OK, and then click OK again.

Hi,

this drive comes from AppV. Did you install the Click and Run version of Office 2010 Beta (for example Starter Edition)?

    When installing Microsoft Office 2010, you will be amazed that your system appears to have one new drive: Local disk (Q). This drive can make a user uncomfortable because it is useless and inaccessible. And after a few hours of surfing the internet, I feel it is interesting to successfully hide the useless drive.

    Microsoft Excel 2010

    Microsoft PowerPoint

    Local Disk (Q)

    Inaccessible

    The reason for this appearing is that Microsoft Office 2010 uses Click and Run version which applies the App-V technology. “Drive Q: comes from Click and Run version of Office 2010. This drive is used by the App-V technology which is used by the Click and Run version.”

    Drive Q can be seen by the registry.

    There are 2 solutions to solve this:

    1. If you already used TweakUI or you want an easy way to do, it is the best solution:
      1. Download TweakUI
      2. Run TweakUI -> Drives
      3. Uncheck drive Q and Click Apply button at the bottom right
    2. Using Registry
      1. Start Menu >> Run and type regedit and press Enter
      2. Navigate to the following path:

    Collapse

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

        (If Explorer is not here, you can right click and select new key and enter Explorer to create key Explorer as image below.)
3. Right click New >> DWORD (32-bits) value:

    - Value Name: NoDrives
    - Value Data (Decimal): 65536

4. Restart your machine to apply changes and see your work.
