Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service.

Every so often, 1 in 50, my laptop is very slow to start-up I get the "Please Wait" before the login screen.  Once I do log in I get the error:

"Failed to connect to a windows service.

Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond."

Aero seems to be disabled also and cannot be fixed without a restart.  This problem is getting to be bothersome and I need to know if it could be hardware related.  Thank you in advance for you help.

This works!!!

 Reset the Winsock Catalog

  1. Open a Command Prompt as an Administrator.
  2. Type “netsh winsock reset” (without quotes) and press Enter.
  3. Restart the computer.

Hi,

Since when are you facing this issue?

Did you make any software or hardware changes to the computer recently?

Check if the System Event Notification Service is running or not. To check for the services

1.      Click on Start

2.      In the start Search box type Services

3.      Right Click on - RUN AS ADMIN

Check if the below mentioned services has the mentioned status and start up type.

System Event Notification Service            Started                 Automatic

Also, check the dependency services that are required for System Restore Service to run.

To check that double click on the service and click on the dependency tab.

For the system being slow you may try to improve the performance by optimizing Windows and check if that helps. Follow the link given below on how to optimize Windows.

Optimize Windows 7 for better performance

The aero issue can be resolved by installing or reinstalling the updated graphics card drivers. You may check if any update for the Graphics card is available for your computer from the computer manufacturer.

Microsoft finally has a patch to solve this annoying problem:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2555428/en-us

I applied the patch, it works.

Since the install of this update the "winsock reset" option does not work anymore for me....coincidence? I de installed it but it did not help. So I figured out that The problem can be resolved by instaling/deinstaling any program. It does not mather what program.... but i did not check if installing any windows update resolves the problem too... I will check that soon.

Worked for me. Unplug your headphones, restart, reset winsock and restart again.

I read this, remember I fiddled with the headphones two days ago, the power went out today due to snow and this happened.

    Thanks!

    High all,

I think I found the problem. And thus the solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This morning I experienced the same problem as described above. Really annoying because of three things: I bought an SSD to boot up faster; then the error message disappeared way to fast to read it and find a solution!; and if you final rebooted three times to read the message you cannot find "System Event log" to view the problem??? .... That's appreciated Microsoft.....

But via googleing "System Event log" I found this forum :) and as is suspected "System Event log" = Event Viewer. To find the error report do this:

    -Select Windows Logs

    -Double click System

    -Right click on System

    -Select Filter Current Log

-Check Error and click on OK

My error is a service control error and it says: The Audio Service service hung on starting. But then why did it hung?...

Looking at the posts many people experience similar problems and some can solve it temporarily. A solution is (de)installing some programme or use winsock reset. Thus some sort of reset does the trick in temporarily solving the problem. But it occures in an irregular fashion. So what is causing it?

Then I remembered that I yesterday turned out the laptop with the earphone/speakers still plunged in. It is horribly stupid to think that leaving the earphone plunged in make your system fail. But then again: it's windows! And also mind that many people listen to music via earphones. On top of that the error report is on the audio service!

As test I rebooted the laptop after using: Command Prompt (Run as administrator) --> netsh --> winsock reset --> exit --> exit. That reboot went smooth. Then I rebooted a second time successfully. Then I plunged in my earphone and rebooted a third time. When the screen got black I unplugged the earphone. This time the problem reoccurred. It is not hard evidence but it sounds illogical logic and it passed my hypothesis. Thats good enough for me. :)

    Solution for users:

Unplug your earphone before you shut down the computer

    Advise to windows:

    Fix this horrible crappy bug

    shears,

    Jeroen
