Only speculations :

  1. You have 2 identical e-mail accounts. Open Windows Mail > Tools > Accounts. See 2 identical accounts ?
  2. Your anti-virus program has an e-mail scanning action which causes havoc. It is wise to disable that scanning option.

Tools | Accounts | Mail Section. Any chance you have the same account listed twice?

There are three accounts on the Windows Mail machine from the same e-mail server (sbcglobal.net).  All are set to leave the messages on the server until they are deleted.

Only one account has the duplicate message problem -- which started in the wee hours of since the wee hours of Aug. 15.

No dupes on the other Vista computer running Windows Live Mail, nor on the web-based e-mail from ATT.net.

Problem account has been deleted and recreated twice.  Still no joy.

    On all  machines:

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced - Check: Leave a copy of messages on the server.

On one machine only, check to Delete messages after X days to satisfy your allotted space you get from your server.

And make sure that the account is only entered once on the problem machine,

We have 3 accounts in Windows Mail.  During a routine send/receive for all accounts, we got a pop-up asking for sign-on info -- e-mail address and password.

In the past, this has popped up occasionally and we've just cancelled with no problem.  This time, we filled it in with one of the e-mail accounts and password.

Suddenly, many old messages were re-received and, ever since, each message in that account has been coming in twice -- duplicated.  This only happens on this one computer.

It's not the anti-virus; that hasn't changed.  The list of accounts still includes 3 separate accounts.  Send/receive shows only these 3 accounts.  But, it seems to duplicate the receive operation each time.

    Not duplicate accounts.

    No change in security software.

Have to leave the messages on the server because we both use this account on multiple computers.  And, that hasn't been a problem for years.

Something's gone wrong inside Windows Mail, but I can't figure out what or why.
