How to play FLAC file with Windows Media Player 12

Is there any way to play Flac files with Windows Media Player 12?  A hefty percentage of my music library is FLAC.

Thank you for your inquiry.

The Flac extension is not a supported file type of Windows Media Player. You may however user your favorite search engine to search for a solution that may convert the file to a Windows Media Player supported file type.

    You may be in 2015, but the post you were replying to with incredulousness is from 2010.  WMP is extensible by installing additional codecs to support other file formats, and Windows allows you to install other programs that support it.  These solutions have already been provided multiple times over in this thread.

    It's kind of ridiculous that people expect Windows to support everything they will ever want to do both natively and free, 6 years later after it's release.  But, lo and behold, your prayers have been answered as you can upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7/8/8.1 for free today, which I read has system wide FLAC support.

    Edit: I should note that I have *not* yet tried to play FLAC on my Win10 machine, so cannot 100% confirm this at the moment.  Maybe I'll try tonight.

    Just to confirm, there is now indeed native FLAC support in Windows 10.

    Yes, but it's not full support. WMP will transcode on the fly lossless .wma when you are syncing to your usb stick,  audio device or Windows Phone. So you can keep your audio library lossless at home where you have lots of lovely NAS or HDD and when you sync to your WinPhone, the albums don't take up so much space so you take many more with you. And, let's face it 320kbps or even a bit less is mostly fine for in car or on the move.

    But WMP does not sync .flac to WinPhone (not even without transcode) and not to my USB stick in a format my ICE will play.

    Disappointing - I was so happy to have .flac on WM but then irritated because it won't let me sync in the same way I do with lossless wma.
