Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that  they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7  please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7  with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

    Bought a new Dell back in May 2011. I have the same issue intermittently.

    So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7  please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

    Yes, this in fact worked, thank you! :-) Very nice find to a very difficult problem. For the record; I'm on an ASUS P7P67 motherboard, i5-2500k, nvidia 460gtx, 8gb ram and hdd. I've had this problem for ages, and nowhere has the solution been put forward. So again, thank you ;-)

    I've had this problem for three days now on a two year old Dell Studio w/ Win7 and a GeForce 9800GT graphics card.  I recently installed a new driver from Nvidia about the same time I did 20 or so windows updates so when the problem started I was sure it had something to do with these recent changes.  Really wierd behavior, won't wake up, doesn't reboot nicely, requires forced shut down, some re-boots only go part way them get in a reboot loop until I force a shutdown - really bad stuff including flashes of  the blue screen of death.  And this is even after doing multiple system restores and trying all the drivers I could find.  As I surf the net for hints - and there are a lot of them - I was about to go buy a new video card when some post mentioned Win7 Aero themes and I remembered that I had also recently made a change on desktop background themes and pictures.  So WTH, I may as well back out those changes since its so easy to do.  MY SYSTEM IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!!!!!  

         Someone much smarter than I will have to explain this, and it may even be a combination of things, but it was not working with the aero theme enabled and it worked fine once I went back to windows classic. 

    And thats all there is to say.

    Shawn...i have an MSI Mega Book.  About 2 yr old.  Installed Windows 7 and months later, put it in hibernate.  Woke up once, then shutdown.  Now after following all the tips, it still won't wake up.  No screen, no fan, no other sounds, only power light and hibernate light - also i can toggle the satelite light.  Tried unplugging, pulling out battery, tapping F8 on startup, tapping all F buttons on start up.  Any ideas how to get this running?

    Hi Deadbolt31313 ,Thanks for posting on Microsoft Answers!Shawn thanks for your inputs. Deadbolt31313 in addition to Shawn's advice I would also recommend you to enable this Display Adapter to wake the PC after sleep.

    Follow the steps below:

    Check if allow this device to wake the computer is checked in Device Manager.

    1. Click Start, type Device manager in the Start search box and hit Enter.
    2. Select keyboard, it will display your keyboard, right click and select ‘Properties’.
    3. Select the ‘Power management’ tab.
    4. Check the “Allow this device to wake the computer” check box.
    5. Repeat these steps for Mouse and Network adapters as well.
