Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that  they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7  please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7  with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

    I have had the same problem with an HP5304.  Can you tell me about the new NVIDIA driver?

    I had a sleep-wake up problem appear suddenly.  If it went to sleep, the mouse nor keyboard would do anything.  When I pressed the power button on the CPU, the CPU seemed to start up, but the monitor had no signal.  If I turned the monitor off and back on, the announcement that there was no signal would display.  The only way that I was able to get it back was to unplug the  computer and restart.  Usually, the" Resuming Windows " was  what come up. 

    I have Win 7 home 64 bit.

    After doing this several times, I was having problems getting the CPU to turn on after unplugging it, until I was unable to get it to do anything.

    Well, curiously, the power supply had failed.  After installing the new PS, I have not had more problems.  However, the technician told me that he does not feel that sleep is a  good option.  He told me to just let the monitor sleep and leave the computer on unless I was going to be away for several hours.  ???

    An interesting aside.

    I do not remember exactly when I started having problems with my monitor that would always misalign when starting the computer or returning from sleep.  I believe that it was before installing Win 7, but not sure.  I eventually found that I could get it to adjust by opening the n-vidia control panel.  Before it opened, the screen would go black and the come out fine.  But I never was able to find a solution.  With the new PS, the problem disappeared.  (Here is the history.  http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7hardware/thread/a724c866-e029-4bd1-9f09-827b4e17962d?prof=required&ppud=4)

    'I've been having this problem ever since I installed Windows 7.  I have two monitors... the primary is on a VGA cable, and the secondary monitor is on an HDMI cable.  The monitors go to sleep after a period of time, but the computer does not.  When I move the mouse, the secondary monitor on the HDMI connection wakes up, but the primary monitor refuses to wake up.  It makes it very difficult to log in, because the secondary display is just blank.  Removing the VGA cable and plugging it in does not work.  The only thing that works is removing the HDMI cable... so that only the VGA is connected... then it seems to wake the VGA connected monitor.  Then I plug the HDMI back in and everything is back to normal.  BUT I'M SICK OF HAVING TO UNPLUG MONITOR CABLES JUST TO LOG IN.  This is a WINDOWS 7-instigated problem, for sure.  Same computer, same monitor setup, Windows 7 is the only uncommon factor.  So it's something with the windows 7 drivers or the OS itself.  Graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 3540.'

    Oh, this is definitely a MS Windows 7 Operating System issue.  Power saving features, such as turning monitors off and on, are an OS orchestrated feature.  The video card driver is in fact correctly reporting that both monitors are attached.  The OS is failing to send a wake up signal to the device, or it's failing to send enough of them in a timely manner.  It's not checking whether power is restored.  It is RIDICULOUS to suggest that a power interruption or memory issue is causing this.  Is everyone missing the point that my computer does not go to sleep?  My computer does not have memory issues; everything is intact. The only problem is that the "primary" monitor does not wake up when the secondary monitor does, whether it's attached as VGA or HDMI.  I have an ATI card, and this problem is happening on NVIDIA cards as well.  The only thing in common is the Operating System

    Same problem here.

    Brand new PC, ATI 4650 graphics, ASUS P755D mobo, i5 750 processor.

    Everything up to date including win 7 & all drivers.

    Monitor set to go into sleep mode after 10 mins but it will not come out of it.

    The PC itself is still running in the background but just no video output.

    So I'd say its a windows 7 problem not a video driver since its happening to both ATI & Nvidia cards.

    I have the same problem I believe it is a thing with win7 i had my system on vista before and didnt have that problem. myself the only way i can get it to restart is shutting it off unplugging it for 2 min then restarting it. the only way it comes back up is if i have a game or a program running in the back like windows media player.

    I could go on ..and on and on. And from many othe forums not just Microsoft forums

    THIS IS A BUG IN YOUR OS i.e WIN 7

    MICROSOFT!!

    GET IT FIXED!! AND SOON!!

    I have scored these  boards and others and done everything  can and still my computer does not wake up using windows 7.

    The only way I can wake it up is to actually switch the power supply off at the back and then press the power button, often 2 or 3 times, until the computer reboots - often telling me that it was not shut down properly.

    This IS a Windows 7 issue!

    I have now had it on 3 computers now that I have installed win 7, one as an upgrade on my old desktop, one a laptop as a new install and on this one I am using now on a completely new desktop I just built.

    My old desktop was a little easier to wake up as if I kept pressing the power button several times and if it did not work  and ctl alt del a few times it would wake up, the laptop I had to switch off completely and this new one I have to pull the power, put it back again and then reboot.

    I see no point in listing the hardware etc on any of these machines as all have completely different hardware and all while running Win7 have the same problem.

    On two of them I gave up  I have wiped and reinstalled with a previous operating system and they are BOTH totally fine now. The laptop I re-installed to vista and the desktop as my daughter wanted it to play older games I put Windows XP on it and neither now have this wake up problem!!

    But my own newly built desktop that I need for work which I have left running Win 7 still does not wake up!! This despite updating every driver ( did that on the other two too before I gave up and reverted back to older OS on both of them!)  trying every workaround I've read on theses forums and many others - including switching off hybrid sleep as suggested by many and on many forums - this made it worse as now it requires a reboot at least with this on it seemed to hibernate and woke up finally looking as it had when it went to sleep with the applications and windows I was using still on, but only after I had turned the power on and off and pressed the power button several times.

    When is the Windows tech team going to accept that this is a windows 7 issue, a BUG that they need to fix and issue an update to fix??

    I may not be a tester anymore but I was a beta tester for win98, WinXP and ME and I recognise a bug when I find one

    Please get it fixed Windows!
