Monitor won't wake up when coming back from sleep (Windows 7)

I recently upgraded my Dell Dimension desktop to Windows 7. In order to do so, I had to install a new grapchis card (NVIDIA GeForce).

I set the PC to sleep after a period of time. When I go to move the mouse and wake the computer back up, the PC itself seems to respond, but the monitor never comes back from sleep. I have no choice but to reboot to get the monitor back.

Any suggestions?

A Universal fix would be ideal but - ASUS appears in 14 out of the 16 pages in this thread!!! Not saying everybody having this problem has an ASUS motherboard but if they do, and it seems a high percentage of people do, then they need todisable the PLL Overvoltage in their BIOS!!

IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Not just a workaround, my Computer AND Monitor now both wake from sleep by simply moving the mouse!

Also, obviously only people who have this problem are going to come here. If this is a wide-spread Windows 7 problem, then what about all the complaints large companies like HP Compaq and DELL etc would receive when their customers have the same problem? If they received many complaints and being that  they have a much bigger voice than us they would simply demand Microsoft fix it. I also have a TOSHIBA laptop running windows 7 and it sleeps and wakes just fine.

So if anybody who has friends or family who own a 2011 Dell, Acer or HP etc that came out brand new, factory loaded with Windows 7  please ask them if they have this issue or not. (These companies may have had this problem initially but I would imagine it would be fixed by now??!!)

A lot of people who have this problem also seem to have a separate Video Card (I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 which of course the monitor is connected to) Do any people who are using integrated graphics also have this problem such as people with an H67 mobo?

I am curious as to what percentage of Windows 7 users have this problem. We may find we are in the 1% bracket and 99% of Windows 7 users don't have this problem. It may just be incompatibility of Windows 7  with either our hardware or settings.

In my case disabling PLL Overvoltage works! :-)

    Reading all these responses it is hard to put a finger on any of it. This is my situation. First, I never let my computer(s) sleep, as I remote into them from either work to home, or home to work.

    Home machine: built, EVGA x58 3SLI Mobo, 12GB RAM, EVGA GTX285 Graphics, Core i7 960 Chip, 10K Raptors (x2), running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, twin LG-227WTG monitors on (DVI).

    Situation: Only power management setting enabled, put monitors to sleep after 10 minutes.

    Symptom: After sleep of monitors only, moving mouse or touching keyboard wakes monitors, putting in password to unlock the screen, both monitors go black (still powered, backlighting on), HDD lights flickering randomly. At this point nothing can be done but pressing and holding in the power button.

    Work system: DELL Precision Workstation T3400, Core2Quad Q9300, 8GB ECC Memory, Nvidia GTX9800+, twin 10K Raptors, twin DELL W2007FP monitors (DVI)

    Original OS, Win Vista x64, system is one year old, same power setting as above on home built system (only monitors sleep). Using this system daily for a year, no problems with waking up or logging in after waking the monitors up.

    On Friday, I upgraded the machine from Win Vista x64 Ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate x64. Upgrade smooth, machine running great, re-applied graphics drivers, etc.

    Over the weekend I remoted into the system (and have done the same going towards the home system from work), everything fine.

    This morning come in, move mouse, monitors wake, put password in, black !!!! same symptoms as home system. Press and hold power button restart.

    Now, two totally different systems, different RAM , different MB, different graphics cards (Same mfg), same graphics driver version, same OS.  Same symptom on both.

    Windows 7 obviously is part of this as on Vista (exact same system no changes), it was fine.

    Video drivers and some interaction with Windows 7 and power management? Maybe, except my monitors wake only to go blank after entering windows password. Also, these machines can be remoted into while the monitors are sleeping.

    So I am at a loss only to not let anything sleep and turning off the monitors with the power buttons (which is what I do at home now).

    I think there is something wrong with Win 7 and possibly interaction with video drivers. Reading this post, similar things happen to ATI users as well.  But no one had the same issue I do, or at least I did not gather it from the posts.

    I wish there was a way to fix this, as I often forget to turn my monitors off and they just consume power when they could be sleeping.

    something that ocured to me does anyone else rinning 64 bit w7 have a problem with "away mode system" coming up in action center? its says its non critical so i havent bothered sorting it but i might try disabeling in next time i restart.
