original title: Windows Vista 32-bit crashes as system is loading. Safe mode hangs after crcdisk.sys loads. System restore also fails.
My computer (an HP m9200t) no longer fully boots after installing a new windows update. When turned on the computer will begin to load windows and allow me sign in. However, about 30 seconds to 2 minutes after signing in I can no longer interact with my desktop (although I can interact with programs that automatically load upon startup, like windows live messenger). I sometimes receive a screen that says "kbd.exe failed to initialize properly". I have tried to restore my system to a point before the update loaded, but I am told my file system is corrupt. When I run a system diagnostic, I am told there is a problem with one of my hard drives. I have also tried to boot in safe mode, but the system hangs immediately after loading crcdisk.sys

As I m mentioned before I just did a clean install since I hadn't no m ore time for investigating this further since it is a software problem.
The new installation still works fine. The HDD is OK. No bad sectors etc. It just work fine. I assume that a (system) driver needed for accessing the HDD was corrupted and since SFC etc. not worked I did the clean install.
The clean installation also solved lot of other problems I had with Fista Ultimate (32bit) ;-)
Maybe I do a upgrade to Windows 7 in the near future ... But not I just not touch/change the running system ;-)
Hi hfrmobile,
Those seem to be symptoms of drive corruption or even failure so start keeping good redundant
backups. If it is the drive it can sometimes be corrected however that may not last and I would
consider the drive unreliable. Sure there are a few cases where the drive lasted a long time just
not a high percentage of those with the issue.

This is my latest troubleshooter which may help :
Try Startup Repair from the Recovery Console (if you have one) or from a Vista disk - if you
do not have a Vista disk you can borrow a friends (they are not copy protected) or make one.
Also your System maker will sell the physical disks cheap since you already own Windows.
This tells you how to access the System Recovery Options and/or with a Vista Disk

Try StartUp Repair from Recovery Options and/or a Vista disk.

Also from the Command Prompt of Recovery or a Vista disk :
chkdsk /f /r
(there are spaces after k and before / and after f and before / )

CheckDisk fails to complete as above :

You can save your files by putting the drive in another computer as 2nd drive (best) or an External
USB drive case and then backing them up to removable media such as CD, DVD, or other USB drives.
Of course a real computer shop or your System maker can help recover the files.
Or you could use an Ubuntu boot CD to back up the data.
Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer
Hope this helps.
Just for information:
- It is a software problem not a hardware problem as the MVP claimed
- Maybe as other uses here suggested: An Adobe Flash update may causing the problem and/or crcdisk.sys may be corrupted (don't know how this is possible under Fista or Win7)
- It is worth an attempt using sfc.exe (System File Checker) - but maybe you'll have troubles using the original CD when using a ServicePack of Fista or Win7 (...)
- I'll try sfc.exe tomorrow and let you know if it worked or not of maybe I find a solution ...
Good luck.
OK, I tried sfc.exe now with the following result:
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
I was able to take a screen-shot to my SkyDrive until Fista died again:

Fista drives my crazy ... When I think about the time it is needed for "maintenance" / "repairing" etc. and the time it is useful: 90% vs. 10% ... Microsoft should be punished to give their poor Fista users a FREE upgrade to Windows 7 ...... ^^
Any ideas left how to repair the Fista installation with that symptoms?
Any help/suggestion/idea is welcome!
OK, I am not allone with this issue. Exists there a solution? Don't think it is a trojan or malware since my MSE is up-2-date :D .... (that's sarkasm!)
(a clean re-installation is not a solution - it is a reason for kicking some guys at Microsoft into their a....)
That is not sarcasm, that's reality or "daily routine" for Fista users ....
