I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical. If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on. If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

Possible fix as it worked for me.......... If you have your router set for WEP, change it to WPA2-PSK [AES] or whichever you have but know that you will have to reconnect to the router from every PC in the house. You can use the same passcode as you initially were using.... let me know if this works.
No router involved on my setup. I am stuck, Verizon support tells me it a computer problem, Asus support tells me it is a hardware problem from Verizon, Microsoft support will not respond to my questions.

What is a "DHCP based ip assignment'? And I hate it when IT reply things like "make sure you have a unique ip address.." right And i would do that how exactly? Please help. I've gotten up to Control panel/Network connections and 'obtain ip address was already selected but this doesn't seem to solve the problem. Please help.
